History of Peaks & Dales Advocacy
Peaks and Dales Advocacy (PADA) is a registered charity and has been active in the High Peaks and Dales since 1988. For the best part of thirty years PADA provided an independent service supporting vulnerable and marginalised people in the High Peaks and Dales to voice their wants, needs and aspirations to those in authority.
In April of 2017 the one-to-one advocacy function of PADA reduced due to changes in Health and County Council funding.
As a consequence of this PADA concentrated successfully on community projects which facilitate informed choice and community involvement.
In June 2018 a management committee meeting of Peaks and Dales Advocacy made the decision that we would get back into delivering advocacy and that we would be upfront about that – offering, with the limited resources we have at present, advocacy support for daily living, to people in the High Peak and Dales and wherever else in Derbyshire they might live.
We recognise that there are many people, including some we already know, who “fall off the edge” of the criteria for independent community advocacy currently provided in contract to Derbyshire County Council by Derbyshire Mind.
We know that there is a real need for people to have that bit of help, at a meeting, or appointment, by writing a letter or making a phone call. This is advocacy that will assist people to get on with their day to day lives without as much anxiety or vulnerability they would experience without that help.
By providing this sort of advocacy, which we are calling “Advocacy for Living” we are not concentrating on Care Act issues or other statutory requirements but from September onwards, until April next year, we will have just a couple of days a week to start delivering our sort of advocacy again.
For the time being at least there will only be a couple of people working as advocates; Ann Young and Peter Dawson. We do not have any new funding at present and unless we get some we will grind to a halt at the end of March next year. We need more funding for this service to continue and to grow.
What we are offering until such as we get refunded, or not, albeit in a small way at present, is what Peaks and Dales Advocacy is all about; alternative, community-based, grass-roots advocacy with the aim and purpose of supporting people to have better lives.
Already by the end of 2018 we have while resources allowed successfully run projects called Community Solutions and Friendship First.
